We all make stupid mistakes and when it’s something as serious as WIPING OUT ALL YOUR DATA ON YOUR PHONE (I mean everything; contacts, calender, settings, messages, application data and ALL backup and restore files), you’re pretty much S*****d!!

Or are you?

Turns out there may be a way to save your Data!!

(PS: I admit that I’m an idiot and I went and wiped out my N900. I also freely admit that Nokia’s customer care was of no use.)

Here’s what you do:

Connect your N900 to the PC on Mass Transfer Mode

Use any data recovery software (I used the Demo of File Scavenger)

Just do a quick search and recover onto the N900. As far as possible try not to put back all your photos and videos and music files because that’s going to take forver.

So File Scavenger recovers all the data but can’t link it to the right path on the phone, so you’re not going to find the restoration files in the Backup App on your phone. Here’s what you do for that:

Open file explorer on your comp (assuming you still have the N900 connected on mass storage mode)

Search for a folder that has at least a part of “BACKUPS” in it. I found a file named _ _CKUPS.

Rename it as BACKUPS

Now check out the data on the BACKUP app on the phone.

VOILA!! You’re set.. Restore everything, and don’t make the same mistake again!!

Yup, we at @mynokiaworld can help out. At times. If we figure out what to do.

Come back for more news, reviews and updates. Hopefully, it won’t be because of this!!

DIY Solar Charger for the N900

All

Mobile Tips

hack

n900

Ever feel that your N900 is draining too fast and need to keep it juiced up. What if you can’t find a outlet to plug in your charger? An ingenious person has hacked up a solar charger for the N900 using a car charger and a 1W Solar Panel. It’s simple really! This DIY solar charger should work with most other phones as well as long as you get the car-charger, a solar panel and some alligator clips as shown in the video here.

Here’s a video if it in action:

Giacomo‘s help we’ve got a better script which takes the phone numbers to block from a text file.

Something which I really missed on the N900 was a good call blocking software. After being hounded day after day by credit card sales people and people trying to give me low interest loans, I had to find a way to get this done. A bit of hunting on the web and picking up a little bit of Python, I hacked a working solution to this problem. It’s not a perfect solution, and is a hack job, but it should do till someone writes up a good application to handle unwanted callers.

Step 1: Install Dependencies on your phone
Before we go to the call block script, you’ll need to install a few apps on your phone. First you’ll need to gain root access to your phone, so head over to your App Manager and install rootsh. If you can’t find it in your app manager, head over to this URL and download rootsh – maemo.org/downloads/product/Maemo5/rootsh/

If you haven’t installed a Python application in your phone, you’ll have to install the Python runtimes on your device. If you haven’t installed the extras-devel repositories, check for the Maemo 5 instructions here – pymaemo.garage.maemo.org/installation_device.html. Once you have that repository installed on your phone, search and install maemo-python-device-env to install python.

Step 2: Download and move the Script to your phone
Once that’s installed, download this zip file and extract the python script from the file and save this file your device under Nokia N900/ as callblock.py .

Step 3: Create the Block list with numbers you’d like to block
Before running this script, you’ll need to create a text file with the numbers you need to block. Add as many numbers you’d like to block on a new line. The file contents should like like below:

+918067337555
+918067348300
+918066167590

Save this file as BlockedCallers.txt in the same location you saved the call block script. Please enter the numbers in the format you see when you get the calls, so you needn’t enter it exactly as I’ve put it up.

Step 4: Run the script on your phone
Now to start the call block script, head over to the terminal, get into the root mode by entering the following:

root

and then start the callblock application and background it:

python /home/user/MyDocs/callblock.py &

Make sure you type the command as is, with the capitalizations in MyDocs typed in, or the command will fail.

Now you’ve got the script running on your phone in the background and you can close the Terminal window. Your phone will block any calls with the numbers you’ve saved in the BlockedCallers.txt file. Anytime you want to change the numbers, you’ll have to edit the BlockedCallers.txt text file and add numbers into it. You’ll have to restart the script to get the latest edits to your block numbers active.

Also when ever you restart the phone, you’ll have to follow the last steps to restart the call block application. So remember when you restart the phone, make sure you go to the terminal and enter the following two lines into it:

earlier, we received the N900 to test out from WOM World Nokia. Having used it for a little while now, we thought we’d give you an introduction to setting up and running the phone. We will be going through an initial time setup, basic contacts and calender setup, email, Nokia Messaging and IM setup, etc.

Basic Setup:

Once you boot up the phone for the first time, you’ll come to the initial settings page – language, region, date, time. You would think that this would be a hard phone/device to get used to, but it is actually pretty intuitive. To do the simple stuff at least. Setting up the time just involves moving the hands of the clock, setting up the date involves scrolling through the date tabs. To choose the time zone, you can just scroll through the world map to the place you are at, or you can enter text and search. You can add upto 4 home screens, and fill them with application shortcuts, widgets, bookmarks or even add contacts.

Time, Region & Date Settings;Desktop Settings

Contacts Transfer/Setup, IM and Email Setup:

You can transfer contacts from your old s60 phone through the Settings -> Transfer & Sync tab. You can also transfer contacts, calender and Notes through PC Suite.Editing and adding contacts can be done through the contacts application itself.

You can set up various VoIP and IM accounts from Settings ->VoIP and IM accounts. The phone currently supports Ovi, GTalk, Skype, Jabber and other SIP accounts. You can add MSN support through a plug-in, but more on that in the next set of reviews.Once you enter your username and password, the phone downloads your contacts from each IM service. Do note that once you set up Skype, you can enable calling contacts through Skype from the settings tab. You can check your balance and add credit through the device itself!

To add an email account, all you have to do is go to the Email icon, and add new account. Once you select the region you’re in, it will give you a list of services that are available. This includes Nokia Messaging (Note: I had to pop in an Airtel Sim to get Nokia Messaging up. Have no idea why that happened, is Nokia Messaging service operator specific?). Enter your username and password and you’re set!

Of course, since there are going to be a whole bunch of contacts, with your phone numbers, mail IDs and IM contacts, it might be a bit of a pain scrolling through your contacts list. You can merge contacts though – just open the settings tab for the contact, select Merge Contact, and select all the other contacts you want to merge this with.

Contacts, IM and Email Setup

Messaging:

Once you set up all your accounts, its very simple to use the device. IM and Text messages are aggregated under one simple application. The messages and IM are threaded, so you have your whole chat history. The good think (in my opinion) is that each IM account and texts show up under the same contact name, but are separate. They are arranged by whichever one was used latest, but you can search by typing out the contact name, or by selecting the “new IM” or “new SMS” icon. In case that contact has any chat history, the last thread will show up. You can select and delete individual texts too.
<p

Missed calls, SMS, IM and Email all blink blue. Did you know you can have different colors for each of these notifications?

You’ll need to get your hands dirty with some terminal work to get this done. Even though this procedure is quite safe, editing the file we have to edit is a system configuration file and a edit or delete in the wrong place in the file can cause your phone to be bricked. And our disclaimer is that we are not responsible for you actions on this file.

First you need to install rootsh, and a text editor like leafpad (to edit the configuration file). You can get these software from App Manager on the phone. Once you have these installed, start up the terminal (Menu> More>X terminal) and type in the following command:

root

This will land you on the root (administrator) mode in the terminal. Be careful on what you type in from here on. Let’s get to the configuration file and make a backup it to the documents folder of the N900, in case we need it later.

cd /etc/mce/

leafpad mce.ini

This will open up the leafpad text editor with the contents of this file. Now scroll down the file till you reach a section of the file which starts with [LEDPatternLystiRX51]. This is the section which handles the LED Notifications. Scroll a bit further till you see these sets of lines:
<div

Let’s break down the notification:
green),b (blue) or a combination of that to get a new notification color. Let’s set a Purple color for calls, Green for SMS, White for Instant Messages, Bluish-green for Emails and Blue for other notifications. Once you install this update, head over to the Application folder on your phone and you’ll see a new application called “Reorganizer” there. Run that application. It took around 10 seconds to run on my phone and I found that the space on the Phone Memory did increase by around 3-4MB. Other people on the internet have reported an increase of up to 11MB using this.

Did you get more (or less) space reclaimed on your Phone memory (C: drive) when you ran this application? Let us know by commenting below.

An App a Day on Ovi Store

All

Mobile Tips

ovi
<guid

I’m sure not many of us keep visiting the Ovi store often to see if there are any new apps of interest to install on our phones. Did you know that the Ovi Store had a blog called the Ovi Daily App where they blog about an application from the store everyday?

Most of the applications they review are interesting enough to go and try out. It’s a great way to check out apps without having to install then and try then out first. So if you’re pressed for time and want the low down on apps on the Ovi Store, make sure you add the Ovi Daily App blog to your reading list.

If you’re on twitter, add <a

But what’s the use if it doesn’t support a photo sharing site of your choice?

I use Share Online to upload pictures taken from my device to my Flickr account via MobyPicture. But two days back I found that I can directly post it to Flickr through Share Online. So I quickly opened Share Online went to OPTION > ADD NEW ACCOUNT > UPDATE SERVICES. Nothing new appeared and utterly disappointed to learn that this particular service is only available to a handful of countries.

So what can we do if we are in a country like Sri Lanka, India or Saudi, which is not in the list? Fairly simple, just follow the following steps and you will be happy as I am.
<div
