Hopefully they’ll launch that soon!

Oh wait, just as I was putting this up, there’s an update from Nokia that says it’ll take longer than 4 weeks, and that it would launch sometime early September! Well, not much according to Nokia CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo. Here’s what he had to say over at Nokia Conversations, the official Nokia Blog.

Here’s what he had to say:

“Starting with the N8, Nokia aims to ship more than 50 million Symbian^3 devices in the coming years, alongside devices using other versions of the Symbian OS.

“The feedback from operators on the N8 and Symbian^3 has been very good,” he said. “The Nokia N8 will have a user experience superior to that of any smartphone Nokia has produced. I’m optimistic that the N8 will be the first step towards overcoming the challenges we face at the high end of our portfolio.”

OPK and Timo explained that the N8 and Symbian^3 mark a change in the way Nokia creates smartphones. For one thing, the approach is a lot more software-centric, which should make product development easier. For another, Symbian^3 will also be much more uniform across different phones than has been the case with previous Symbian releases. This spells good news for developers (and the people that use their applications) since they will be able to more easily create apps that work across the whole family.

To finish off, OPK touched on the role of Symbian and MeeGo in Nokia’s portfolio. In his words: “Symbian is about leveraging scale and expanding the smartphone category to cover a broad mass market footprint. In contrast, MeeGo is about leveraging speed and agility to create industry leading flagship solutions. Symbian and MeeGo have different sweet spots. We intend to capitalize on the unique strengths of each platform.” “

The idea is to make standard actions, like receiving a call, opening texts & emails, etc., more interactive by converting digitial information into kinetic movement.

So basically, the phone itself responds to notifications using movements. It utilizes an electromagnet at the base of the phone to shift weight, allowing to phone to “stand up”. You can dismiss the call by just tapping it back down. Quite simple, and fun in my opinion. I don’t know how the concept can actually be realized into a product, but if it did, it’d be really cool to see it in action! href="http://www.nokia.com/press/press-releases/showpressrelease?newsid=1429777">press-release which outlines Nokia’s plans to sell their wireless modem business to Renesas Electronics Corporation and for around $200 million.

Espoo, Finland and Tokyo, Japan – Renesas Electronics Corporation, a premier supplier of advanced semiconductor solutions, and Nokia Corporation, the world leader in mobile communications, today announced that they are deepening their collaboration by forming a strategic business alliance to develop modem technologies for HSPA+/LTE (Evolved High-Speed Packet Access / Long-Term Evolution) and its evolution.

As part of this alliance, the companies have entered into an agreement whereby Renesas Electronics is to acquire Nokia’s wireless modem business for approximately USD 200 million. The alliance is planned to be enhanced by long-term joint research cooperation on future radio technologies.

The planned transfer of Nokia’s wireless modem business enables Renesas Electronics to maximize the value of Nokia’s technology assets and engineering expertise in delivering advanced mobile platform solutions to the market by combining them with Renesas Electronics’ market-proven multimedia processing and RF technologies. Together with Renesas Electronics’ robust line-up of application processors, RF transceiver ICs, high power amplifiers, and power management devices, the wireless modem technologies enable Renesas Electronics to deliver a complete mobile platform solution to the market.

The wireless modem business to be transferred to Renesas Electronics includes Nokia’s wireless modem technologies for LTE, HSPA and GSM standards, which have been used for billions of handsets in the global market over the years. Further, Nokia transfers Renesas Electronics certain patents related to the transferred technology asset. The planned transfer would also include approximately 1,100 Nokia R&D professionals, the vast majority of whom are located in Finland, India, the UK and Denmark.

The planned transfer is expected to further strengthen Renesas Electronics’ position as one of the leading chipset vendors in the 3G and LTE market that is capable of providing one-stop mobile platform solutions, supporting an extensive range of modem protocols from GSM to LTE, and integrating advanced multimedia and computer processing capabilities.

“The agreement with Nokia demonstrates our long-standing commitment to shape the future of advanced mobile platforms and will serve as an important step for us to become a leading mobile platform vendor in the global market. Our collaboration with Nokia will enable consumers to enjoy true mobile cloud computing experiences through our advanced high-speed mobile devices,” said Yasushi Akao, President of Renesas Electronics Corporation. “In line with our ongoing efforts to strengthen our business structure, the transferring wireless modem technology and the innovation power and expertise of Nokia’s employees will perfectly complement our core competences and serve as the key driving forces in growing our mobile business in the global market.”

“Wireless modems are an integral part of today’s chipset solutions, and we believe that Renesas Electronics, as one of the key chipset vendors in the market, is in an ideal position to further develop this offering. The alliance enables us to continue to focus on our own core businesses, connecting people to what matters to them with our mobile products and solutions,” says Kai Oistamo, Executive Vice President, Nokia.

Renesas Electronics has licensed the Nokia modem since 2009 and the two companies have been working together to develop an industry-leading HSPA+/LTE platform. “I believe that the integration of the world class Nokia wireless modem into Renesas Electronics’ strong multimedia processing and RF capabilities, places Renesas Electronics in a strong position in HSPA+/LTE chipsets,” says Oistamo.

In order to implement the planned business transfer, Nokia will start the appropriate personnel consultation process with its personnel representatives according to each applicable jurisdiction’s labor law requirements. The transfer is subject to regulatory approvals and other customary closing conditions, and is estimated to take place during the fourth quarter 2010.

About Renesas Electronics Corporation
Symbian-Guru is shutting shop and The Nokia Guide is no longer covering Symbian devices. Symbian Guru’s been one of the sites I started following first when I started off with Symbian phones, and it’s bad news when the biggest Symbian evangelist blog shuts down due their frustration with Nokia and Symbian.

Agreed, Symbian in it’s current form has been used way past it’s expiry date, but we’d wait and watch to see if Symbian as a platform improves in it’s next versions. Nokia really has to play a lead role and improve the OS drastically to power it’s next lot of smartphones or ditch it completely. Of what we’ve seen in the pre-release versions of Symbian^3, it looks like there’s a long way to go to get Symbian in any shape to compete with iOS and Android. We just hope that phones that are shipping with Symbian^4 are not hardware cripples like the flagship N97 was. Everyone still remembers the limited RAM fiasco with that device.

The other area where Nokia has trouble with is the roll out of firmware upgrades. Most regular users don’t really bother about stuff like this, but mobile enthusiasts can’t wait to get their hands on the latest firmware. These enthusiasts are the ones going out and spreading the good word about the devices. Nokia has been painfully frustrating with the seemingly random way in which they roll out these upgrades. I personally had to wait for 3-4 months to get upgrades on my N97 and the on the E72 (which I still haven’t been able to find the latest firmware for). When asked about these delays in geographical regions, the Nokia folks mention that this has to do with operators branding the phones. I would agree with that statement, but for the fact that I don’t buy operator branded phones, especially here in India.

The only device in which I didn’t have to wait for months for the latest firmware as the N900, where Nokia limited the amount of “operator customizations”. Nokia, this should be the way to go on your future devices. Don’t test the patience of the mobile enthusiast crowd, who actually promote your devices.

In damage control mode, Anssi Vanjoki, the Head of Mobile Solutions put out a post on Nokia Conversation. According to their post, they plan to stick with Symbian for a while more, but also adopt MeeGo to power the smart phones of the future.

“I am committed, perhaps even obsessed, with getting Nokia back to being number one in high-end devices. Achieving this will require performance and efforts over and above the norm.”, says Anssi in the post.

Yes, it’s going to be a real uphill climb for Anssi and his team to reclaim to the top of the Smartphone market, which has been eaten away by the iPhone, Android and others. We wish them the best in this effort and do hope that they do succeed. Let’s hope that in their attempt to rebrand themselves into a solutions company, they don’t forget that they need to sell their devices first for people to use solutions like Ovi.

Firefox for N900 gets updated to v1.1

All

Mobile Software

Nokia News
<guid

What I can say is it finally supports portrait mode, loads up much faster than it did before.
